Rebound & Recovery Opioid Prevention & Wellbeing for Teens

Length:

  • 1 Module, 1 Hour OR
  • 7 Modules, each 45 Minutes – 1 Hour

 Registration Fee: Free through grant funding provided by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) via the Southeast Rural Opioid Technical Assistance Regional Center.

 Credits and Certificate of Completion:

  • 1-Hour Version: Earn 1 General Continuing Education Unit.
  • 7-Lesson Version: Earn 7 General Continuing Education Units.

Includes a downloadable Certificate of Completion, which participants can submit to their accreditation boards to determine credit eligibility.

            Description

            This evidence-informed certification aims to bolster the resilience of middle and high-school-aged youth by building protective factors and equipping them with cognitive-behavioral skills to manage their emotions, thoughts, and actions effectively. Simultaneously, it empowers them to adopt healthier lifestyle habits and provides education on opioids, their misuse, and their impact on thoughts, emotions, and the brain.

            The curriculum also teaches youth peer-to-peer support preparing them to provide support for their peers, as well as better cope with stress and mental health challenges themselves. The program can be completed in a single one-hour lesson for quick implementation or spread across seven one-hour lessons, with the condensed one-hour lesson consolidating all key concepts.

            Lesson Topics

            1 - OPIOID PREVENTION & WELLBEING (1 HR)

            By the end of lesson 1, youth will:

            • Understand what opioids are and identify opioid misuse.
            • Understand how opioid misuse affects an individual’s emotions, thoughts, actions, and brain.
            • Recognize stressors and their impact on well-being.
            • Learn two stress-management techniques: Brain Dump and 4-7-8 Breathing.
            2 - CONNECTION BETWEEN EMOTIONS, THOUGHTS & ACTIONS (1 HR)

            By the end of lesson 2, youth will:

            • Understand what emotions are.
            • Explore the link between emotions, thoughts, and actions.
            • Learn how to identify emotions and gauge their intensity.
            3 - GOAL SETTING (1 HR)

            By the end of lesson 3, youth will:

            • Understand the importance of goals and how they affect their lives.
            • Set SMART goals for emotional and behavioral improvement to achieve where they want to be in life.
            • Learn how to safely store and dispose of medication.
            4 - THE BRAIN (1 HR)

            By the end of lesson 4, youth will:

            • Learn about brain development, including the limbic system and cerebral cortex.
            • Understand how their brain influences their emotions and responses.
            • Understand how opioids impact the brain and body.
            • Practice cognitive breathing techniques and start journaling.
            5 - NEGATIVE & UNHELPFUL THOUGHTS & REFRAMING (1 HR)

            By the end of lesson 5, youth will:

            • Recognize the impact of negative thoughts.
            • Identify thinking errors and learn to reframe them.
            • Practice mindfulness with ninja senses.
            6 - HEALTHY LIFESTYLES (1 HR)

            By the end of lesson 6, youth will:

            • Learn the components of a healthy lifestyle, including healthy relationships and refusal skills for healthy boundary setting.
            • Practice yoga as a calming tool.
            7 - SUPPORT SYSTEMS & PEER-TO-PEER TRAINING (1 HR)

            By the end of lesson 7, youth will:

            • Identify their support networks.
            • Learn how to support peers and plan for future challenges.
            • Use calming tools like finger labyrinths or bean mandalas.
