Rebound & Recovery
for
Tweens

AGES 9-11 | FOR EDUCATORS &
NON-CLIICAL PROFESSIONALS

Length: 8 Modules, each module approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour

  • 1.5 Continuing Education Units approved by the Florida Association for the Education of Young Children (FLAEYC).
  • Downloadable Certificate of Completion: Participants may submit it to their school district or accreditation board to determine credit awarded.

    Description

    Rebound & Recovery for Tweens is developmentally appropriate for upper elementary and middle school-aged youth. It strengthens adolescents’ cognitive behavioral skills while increasing their ability to cope with unexpected daily stressors and life events.

    The curriculum has eight one-hour lessons designed to engage youth through activities such as games, discussions, journaling, and skill building exercises. Youth gain a toolkit of emotional regulation strategies, fostering long-term resilience. The curriculum builds upon cognitive behavioral skills introduced in earlier Rebound & Recovery programs for preschool and elementary students, ensuring continuity across developmental stages.

    TWEEN Module & Lesson Topics

    1 - INTRODUCTION TO EMOTIONS, THOUGHTS & ACTIONS (1 HR)

    By the end of lesson 1, youth will:

    • Understand what emotions are.
    • Explore the link between emotions, thoughts, and actions.
    • Learn how to identify emotions and gauge their intensity.
    2 - NEGATIVE THINKING / REFRAMING (1 HR)

    By the end of lesson 2, youth will:

      • Learn about their brain and responses to experiencing stress or something bad happening.
      • Be able to talk about the brain’s response to stress.
      • Name negative thoughts they have.
      • Name positive thoughts they can reframe their negative thoughts with.
      • Learn the mindfulness technique of using calming putty.
    3 - WHAT IS SADNESS (1 HR)

    By the end of lesson 3, youth will:

    • Learn about sadness, explore things that make them sad, and learn how to deal with sadness.
    • Be able to use the Cognitive Behavioral Triangle to name at least one thing that makes them sad, one action they do when they are sad, and one thing they think about when they are sad.
    • Learn the mindfulness technique of triangle breathing.
    4 - WHAT IS ANGER (1 HR)

    By the end of lesson 4, youth will:

    • Learn about anger, explore things that make them angry, and learn how to deal with anger.
    • Be able to use the Cognitive Behavioral Triangle to name at least one thing that makes them angry, one action they do when they are angry, and one thing they think about when they are angry.
    • Learn the calming technique of pirate earrings.
    5 - WHAT IS ANXIETY & WORRY (1 HR)

    By the end of lesson 5, youth will:

    • Learn about anxiety and worry, explore things that make them anxious and worried, and how to deal with anxiety and worry.
    • Be able to use the Cognitive Behavioral Triangle to name at least one thing that makes them worry, one action they do when they are worried, and one thing they think about when they are worried.
    • Learn the mindfulness technique of visualization.
    6 - WHAT IS HAPPINESS (1 HR)

    By the end of lesson 6, youth will:

    • Learn about happiness, explore things and thoughts that make them happy, and how having a healthy lifestyle can increase well-being and happiness.
    • Be able to use the Cognitive Behavioral Triangle to name at least one thing that makes them happy, one action they do when they are happy, and one thing they think about when they are happy.
    • Learn three Cognitive Behavioral Techniques: Bhramari, Ocean Breathing, and Earworm Singing.
    7 - WHAT IS CALM & SELF-REGULATION (1 HR)

    By the end of lesson 7, youth will:

    • Learn about up-regulating and down-regulating to feel calm.
    • Be able to use the Cognitive Behavioral Triangle to name at least one thing that makes them calm, one action they do when they are calm, and one thing they think about when they are calm.
    • Learn the calming technique of using a finger labyrinth or bean mandala.
    8 - WHAT ARE SUPPORT SYSTEMS (1 HR)

    By the end of lesson 8, youth will:

    • Learn about what support systems are.
    • Explore how support systems help them.
    • Identify their support systems.
    • Learn how support systems impact their thinking, feelings, and behavior.
    • Learn ways to use their calming tools and support systems to impact their thoughts, feelings, and actions.
